Bone carved Ulu knives

Invented by the Inuit, the ulu is a versatile tool used in the construction of boats, skinning of seals and caribou, sewing muklucks and eating muktuk. Ulu (pronounced oo' loo) means Women's Knife, and consists of a handle and semicircular blade. The Ulu is common to many people indigenous to the arctic and comes in many different sizes and shapes. The first ulu blades were made from slate and bone. The handles, sometimes crafted to works of art, were made of bone, antler, wood, or ivory. Today the ULU is commonly used as a kitchen tool, it is good for cutting a variety of vegetables, cheeses, meat and pizza.

Ulu Engraved handle & stand: $139.95

The Artist:
Jim Peterson

Jim Peterson was born and raised in northern Ontario. At an early age he developed a love for nature and the outdoors, spending his time fishing and hunting. As an avid outdoorsman it was only natural that he continues this way of life and fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning and operating a lodge in the barrens. Jim spends his summer months at the lodge. In the ‘shoulder' season he spends his time pursuing his art. He is a self taught artist who enjoys expressing his passion of the barrens through painting and scrimshaw work on caribou antlers. He has lived in Yellowknife for the past 27 years. Jim has a passion for Canada's Arctic and its wildlife especially the Barren ground caribou.

Ulu With Mona Thrasher painted handle & stand: $139.95

Mona Thrasher was born in 1942 in a bush camp between Aklavik and present day Inuvik. At a young age, a hunting accident left her partially deaf and mute. Mona is a self taught artist, with no formal training. At the age of 18, she was approached by Father Adam to paint the Stations of the Cross in the Roman Catholic Church in Inuvik (the Igloo Church). Even though she had never done such a large project, Father Adam knew she was capable. It took Mona just three months to paint all 14 Stations, which still hang in the church today. Since then she has created many paintings, mainly using the colours Blue and White because she believes they best represent the traditional Inuit life - the sky, water, snow and ice. She hopes that through her art, people get a better understanding of the North and its people.
