Company History – A family business since 1984

Jim, Amanda, Margaret and Chad Peterson
In 1979, Jim Peterson fell in love with the North when he moved to Yellowknife with his wife Margaret and two children, Chad and Amanda. Not long after his arrival Jim began sharing his passion for the outdoors by offering survival wilderness training programs with partner Jim Grady. In 1984, Jim began working toward his lifelong dream of building, owning and operating a lodge. His early days were humble, offering guided caribou hunts in dome tents for just a few weeks each year. Margaret was integral in helping build Jim’s dream, Chad naturally became a fishing and hunting guide and Amanda helped with logistics & office work. Over the years gradual improvements were made, tent platforms were built for wall-tent accommodations, then guest cabins and a comfortable lodge & sauna. Although our look and comfort has changed dramatically over the years a few things have remained the same, our commitment to offering quality trips and building a place where people come as guests and leave as friends. Jim lived his dream until the spring of 2008 when he passed away after a courageous fight with cancer. The family continues to work together sharing their love for the North and outdoors by offering fishing and hunting trips that Peterson's Point Lake Lodge (The 'J' Group Ltd.) has become world renowned. Jim shared his love for photography, history, the intricate beauty of the tundra as well as his love for cooking while at the lodge; these are some of the newer programs we have begun to offer at Peterson’s. Peterson’s is a small, close knit business assisted by dedicated and professional guides and cooks whom, have become part of our family.
