Our packages begin in Yellowknife, capital of the Northwest Territories from here you will fly 205 miles north to Point Lake (approximately a one hour and thirty minute flight). You will notice the many geographic features that make this area unique; the ancient forests, rolling hills, valleys, and sand eskers left by retreating glaciers. View aerial flight gallery here.

Alcohol & Tobacco

If you are traveling from the United States, you may want to purchase liquor from a duty free shop. You are allowed duty free up to 40 oz. of liquor and 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars. We do not sell beer, wine or spirits at the lodge, so please feel fee to bring a personal supply for a sociable drink at the end of the day. House wine is complimentary with our special northern dinner. Please note: To ensure the comfort and safety of all guests, intoxication is not permitted. As well, our lodge & accommodations are designated as non-smoking facilities.

Bugs:

Yes they do exist! Weather, wind conditions and amount of snowfall affect the concentrations of biting insects in the barrens. Blackflies, mosquitoes and horseflies are common. Blackflies are one of the most annoying and serious pests affecting the NWT. You may not be aware of a blackfly bite until you notice a small reddish bump on your skin. Bites are commonly found behind your ears, on your neck, along your belt line and on the lower part of your legs and arms. Scratching should be avoided because this can cause skin infections. Mosquito bites can cause irritation. This can be minimized if you avoid scratching or rubbing the site; it will subside quicker if left alone.

Bug Protection:

You may need to take precautions while on the barrens by wearing light coloured clothing, using insect repellents and by avoiding perfumes/aftershave products. You many want to wear a bug jacket and/or head net, which are available at the lodge for your use. The itching from bug bites may be alleviated with Calamine or After-bite lotion.

Your Account:

Your account balance is due June 1st. If there are any discrepancies on your statement, please let us know as soon as possible. New statements will be mailed each time you send a payment. Accounts may be paid by personal or certified cheque.

HUNTING

Licenses: Your hunting license and tags will be available at the lodge upon your arrival. You are required to sign your license and keep in on your person when hunting. Having your license ‘back at the lodge' is not good enough if officials fly-in to conduct an inspection. If time permits and you have the opportunity to fish you can purchase a fishing license at the lodge.

Extra Expenses - Be Prepared

Bow/Rifle Cases:

Whether you are hunting with a rifle or bow, please ensure that you bring a soft case. Before you leave Yellowknife for the lodge, you must transfer your weapon from your hard case to a soft case. This is important because of weight and space restrictions on our charter aircraft. Your hard cases will be safely stored during your hunt. When you get back to Yellowknife from the lodge your hard cases will be available for pick up. Because of weight restrictions on our charter aircraft you are allowed one weapon; i.e. one bow OR one rifle.

Considerations when planning your trip: Keeping your gear to a minimum will make traveling easier and well as save you money.

Airlines – Baggage

Caribou Meat:

Weight restrictions and high costs are making it extremely difficult to take all of your caribou meat home if travelling by plane. In light of this, we recommend that you only take a portion of your caribou meat home (approximately 60 - 70lb container - 2 hind quarters and back strap which are the finest cuts). The remainder of the meat will be donated to the lodge; we will see that it is given to people who would be grateful for the meat. You may wish to check the airline baggage policy with whom you are travelling.

If you decided to drive to Yellowknife and have brought a freezer to store your caribou meat for you your journey home, we would be happy to plug it in for you while you are hunting.

Taxidermy:

We make arrangements with a Canadian Taxidermist to provide on-site preparations of your capes and antlers for mounting. The company that we work with provides this 'in-kind' service in anticipation that you will leave your rack and/or capes with them. Of course, you are under no obligation to have your trophy mounted by the on site taxidermist. Besides providing a professional product leaving your antlers with the taxidermist eliminates the hassle and expense of transporting them home yourself. If you choose not to use their services a small donation for the work provided is appreciatedl. We require that our the taxidermist company send their brochure and prices to you prior to your hunt and have a portfolio of his work available at the lodge.

Antlers:

Many airlines no longer accept antlers as baggage. Please check with your travel agent to confirm your airline's policies on antlers as baggage. If you are planning to fly home with your antlers, they must be securely wrapped. We will provide packaging material at the lodge to protect your antlers for shipping. However, you are responsible for wrapping them. You must bring two rolls of duct tape for this purpose.

Gratuities

In the past, many of our guests have been unsure of the tipping procedure for your guide and the lodge cook. We feel strongly that the size of a tip should reflect the quality of service you receive from our professional staff; approximately $200.00 US per person for your guide is a good average; the cook's tips average $50.00 per person. You can check out our guides' profiles here.

Considerations for planning your return trip home:

Minimizing your travel baggage by keeping your gear to one bag and/or sharing a rifle case with your hunting partner will help make traveling much easier and well as save you money.

When booking your return trip home:

You can book your flight leaving Yellowknife on the evening of the last day of your scheduled trip. Guests who traveled from south of Edmonton may have to overnight in Edmonton and take a flight home the following morning. Arriving home earlier the next day will enable you to butcher your meat sooner. You also have the option of staying in Yellowknife after you return from the lodge and then departing the following morning. Our preferred hotel in Edmonton has shuttle service and a large walk-in freezer to store your meat for the evening.
